I remember that a substantial amount of planning and effort went into making this piece: the ambient background was recorded in an underpass beneath Ottawa’s main downtown limited-access freeway, and as such it may represent an overview of much of what I felt about life in general around the time it was recorded. By that I mean: the background seems representative of the industrial machine I felt enmeshed in, including the frequent automobiles and occasional trucks and buses that intrude, and pass out into the distance; and the not-quite-random construction noises and other less distinct background sounds. I’m inside this, and there’s no clear evidence that I’ll ever be outside it; it seems to go on forever.
And yet, the making of the recording itself—which is part of this struggle—is an act of hope....
