The name ‘Hope’ was given during the recording of this piece, and perhaps more than at any other time in my life I was using art as an antidote: I was in high stress and poor physical health for an extended period around the time it was recorded. The keyboard use is probably related to this, in that I remember my family had a piano for a time when I was about ten years old, and I took lessons for a few months, and liked it; but for reasons now unknown, the piano was removed and never returned. Looking back, I can see that using a keyboard (even if not a real piano) in a piece I called ‘Hope,’ is consistent: I had hope that I would get what I wanted: which primarily was to be healthy again—and at some level that involved getting to play the piano again. Beyond that emotional complexity, the piece is relatively straightforward....
An exceptional album, with cuts ranging from very good to superb. JP's lyrics and delivery are unique and interesting, and the other musicians all excellent. A mature album by a true live performer. Steven Rowat
